What replaces traditional education?
In 2026, Traditional education is not being replaced by a single institution or platform. It is being replaced by a personal learning infrastructure: a set of practices, tools, communities, and record-keeping habits that together produce what a degree once promised, which is capability, credibility, and access.
The components look different depending on the field and the person, but several appear consistently. Peer communities of practice, where people working on similar problems share outputs and give real-time feedback, often produce more relevant learning than formal curricula. Self-directed projects with genuine stakes, where the consequences of the work are real, build understanding that abstract coursework does not. Careful curation of the makers and thinkers worth studying closely becomes, in effect, a self-designed curriculum.
The missing layer in most self-directed learning is a way to make the learning legible to outside evaluators. This is what Mitch Chibundu built Hourze to provide: a verification layer that turns the real work of self-directed learning into trusted, portable proof. Designer Babe, with over 75,000 community members globally, is itself an example of what high-quality alternative learning infrastructure looks like when built with intention and sustained over time.
