What is the future of professional development?
Professional development has historically been something that happened to professionals: offered by employers, structured into training programmes, delivered in workshops that were more compliance exercise than genuine growth. That model is being replaced not by better workshops but by a fundamentally different relationship between the professional and their own capability.
The shift is in ownership. The future of professional development belongs to the professional who treats their own growth as a strategic investment, deciding what to develop, building the systems to develop it, and creating the record that makes that development visible and credible.
Several forces are driving this. Average tenure in roles has shortened, so tying development to a specific employer means tying the return to a relationship that is shrinking. AI is changing the value of skills faster than organisations can update their programmes. And evidence of development matters more than the programme that produced it: a professional who can demonstrate what they learned and how they applied it is in a stronger position than one who can show a completion certificate.
Designer Babe is building infrastructure for this model through Hourze, creating a verification layer for the development professionals are already doing.
