When you've been in your career for more than 7 years, your job search strategy cannot be the same as it was when you first started.

You've evolved, and your strategy should reflect that.

This is why I designed the EIG Matrix. It's a straightforward, effective strategy for mid- to senior-level professionals looking for aligned positions that value their experience while pushing them forward.

What is the EIG Matrix?

EIG stands for:

  • Experience

  • Interest

  • Goal

This career clarity approach enables professionals to plan their next career move with intention and ownership.

I created this matrix after spending a whole year job seeking while funemployed and finding that the majority of advice available was aimed towards entry-level prospects. EIG flips the narrative, putting experienced professionals back in charge.

Let’s Break It Down:

Experience: If you’ve been working for 7+ years, you’ve already built deep knowledge. However, most people don’t take the time to articulate it fully.

Ask yourself:

  • What problems have I solved?

  • What industries, systems, or tools have I worked with?

  • What value have I consistently brought to teams?

Write it all down, it’s your proof of work.

Interest: Your next role should reflect what you're curious about. It is not solely about what you’ve done before.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I want to stay in the same industry or explore a new one?

  • Are there new challenges I want to take on?

  • What skills do I want to use more or less of?

This helps you identify transferable skills and position yourself for roles that align with where you're going, not just where you've been.

Goal: Not all career moves are about climbing the ladder. Some are about freedom, finances, or a stepping stone to something bigger.

Ask yourself:

  • Why do I want this next role?

  • Am I optimising for income, growth, stability, or freedom?

  • How will this affect my negotiation strategy?

Your goal defines how you pitch yourself and what success looks like for you.
